Leicester City Academy graduate Luke Thomas has signed a new long-term contract with the Football Club.

The 19-year-old from Syston caught the eye on his professional debut earlier this summer as he set up the opening goal in a 2-0 win over Sheffield United that secured European football.

Leicester City manager Brendan Rodgers told LCFC.com: “Luke is a fantastic young player, and we’re really pleased that he’s committed his long-term future to the Football Club. He’s got lots of potential and I’m excited to continue working with him and helping him to develop his game.

“He showed tremendous ability in the three games he played for us at the end of the season, which was testament to him and his family, as well as the hard work of the staff from the Academy who have guided him on his journey with Leicester City so far.”

Luke, the 2019/20 Development Squad Player of the Season, has risen through the ranks of Leicester City’s Academy since joining in 2008. He has impressed on the left side of defence and midfield at Under-18s and Under-23s level, while also helping a Leicester City side reach the quarter-finals of last season’s EFL Trophy.

Alongside his rapid rise at Leicester City, the talented Thomas has also represented England at youth level, making his debut for the Under-18s side in 2018 then going on to play for the Under-19s in Dubai for the UAE Sports Chain Cup.

That development continued as he was handed a professional debut against Sheffield United on 16 July and he went on to feature prominently in City’s final two games of the season against Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United.

“Fantastic young player”. Classic Brendan.

Surprised he didn’t mention he was proud to manage him!

Syston lad. Nice to see him get his contract. Let me tell you, coming in the way he did and with the performances he put in under difficult times was excellent. Still so young with so much to learn, but hopefully he can build on his potential and be more Chilwell than Mattock.

More highly thought of than Chilwell by the coaching staff.

He's a beautiful human being.

From what I've seen of Thomas, I think he's a better defender than Chilwell. Maybe he'll be taught to attack as he learns on the job. All of these contract extensions are excellent things.

Mendy is very sensible and avoids us having to look for someone to be a squad player with many potential matches this season.

Maddison can be a top player if he works harder and gets good man-management.

Thomas is part of our future.

Great news very talented young player with a real bright future ahead of him. Big season ahead in terms of development. Would benefit from a loan spell in championship or getting game time in cups and lesser league games given our heavier schedule this season.
