My favourite football pundit-presenter is Alex Scott. So I was surprised that she came under fire from Lord Digby Jones. He attacked her diction and I was reminded o the words of Edmund Burke. He was in fact writing on the death of Marie Antoinette but I am sure he would have said the same about Alex Scott;
I thought ten thousand swords must have leaped from their scabbards, to avenge even a look that threatened her with insult. But the age of chivalry
is gone; that of Robbie Savage, Prince Harry and Leeds United fans has succeeded
It is true she talks about playin football talkin to the ref and footballers tacklin. Digby Jones makes the point that it is not a matter of class or accent but of diction. However, I give his Lordship this advice which I have tried to follow - a gentleman should never criticise a lady. Strangely ladies have never hesitated to criticise me.
